Voli Cancellati? Viaggiate Via Mare!!!
In July 2023, a very busy time of the year for the Catania Sicily airport, a fire inside one of the airport terminals caused weeks of disruption to the flight operations in and out of that airport!
A Luglio del 2023, un periodo dell’anno in cui l’aeroporto di Catania in Sicilia ha un traffico aereo intenso, un incendio che si e’ verificato all’interno di uno dei terminali dell’aeroporto ha causato settimane di interruzioni alle operazioni dei voli sia per l’arrivo che per la partenza dall’aeroporto.
I was scheduled to fly into the Catania airport just over one week from the day the fire took place. Consequently, departing from the USA, my connecting flight from Germany to Catania got cancelled more than once just a couple of hours before I was to board the first plane in the USA.
Avevo un biglietto aereo per arrivare all’aeroporto di Catania una settimana dopo il giorno in cui si era verificato l’incendio. Partendo dagli Stati Uniti con coincidenza per Catania dalla Germania, il volo dalla Germania a Catania e’ stato cancellato piu’ di una volta poche ore prima della partenza dagli Stati Uniti.
After realizing there was no assurance when I would successfully be able to take a connecting flight from a European country into Catania, I swiftly changed my plan and boarded a plane from the USA to Rome!!!
Dopo essermi resa conto che non vi fosse alcuna certezza su quando sarei riuscita a prendere un volo da un paese europeo verso Catania, velocemente ho cambiato programma ed ho preso un volo dagli Stati Uniti per Roma!
Once I was on the plane, I started planning how I could get to Catania, Sicily, in another way than by flying.
Una volta che ero salita a bordo dell’aereo ho iniziato a pianificare come sarei arrivata a Catania, in Sicilia, viaggiando con altri mezzi di trasporto e non in aereo.
Given the circumstances of the time, taking a train all the way from Rome to Sicily was not a good option.
Date le circostanze, prendere un treno da Roma verso la Sicilia non era una buona opzione.
I had decided that I was going to turn this detour into a positive experience! While flying across the ocean to Rome, I researched my options to go South via the sea making some stops at enchanting locations I had wanted to visit for quite some time.
Avevo deciso che avrei trasformato questa deviazione in una esperienza positiva! Mentre ero in volo attraversando l’oceano verso Roma, ho fatto una ricerca per vedere quali fossero le opzioni per andare a sud via mare con delle tappe in luoghi incantevoli che desideravo visitare da tempo!
As soon as I landed in Rome, after clearing customs, I quickly went to the train station located at the Rome Fiumicino Airport! There I caught a train, la Frecciarossa, a high speed train, that would get me to Naples in just over 90 minutes!
Appena sono atterrata a Roma, subito dopo il controllo passaporti, sono corsa alla stazione ferroviaria dentro l’aeroporto di Fiumicino! Li ho preso un treno, la Frecciarossa, un treno ad alta velocita’, che mi avrebbe portata a Napoli in poco piu’ di 90 minuti.
Once I arrived in Naples, I ran outside the train station to catch a cab. I needed to get quickly to one of the harbours in Naples. The cab queue was only thirty minutes and I should make it just on time to board a hydrofoil heading south!
Appena arrivata a Napoli, son corsa a prendere un taxi davanti alla stazione centrale. Dovevo arrivare tempestivamente ad uno dei porti di Napoli. L’attesa per i taxi era di circa trenta minuti e sarei arrivata giusto in tempo a prendere l’aliscafo che andava a sud!
I had just enough time to catch the hydrofoil that would land me on the island of Vulcano, in the Aeolian Islands archipelago just North off the coast of Sicily!
Avevo appena il tempo di prendere l’aliscafo che mi avrebbe portata all’isola di Vulcano, nell’arcipelago delle Isole Eolie, a Nord dalla costa della Sicilia!
My plan was to visit the two farthest islands in the Aeolian Islands archipelago, Filicudi and Alicudi, North off the coast of Sicily, before heading to Catania, Sicily!
La mia intenzione era di visitare le due isole piu’ lontane dell’arcipelago delle Eolie, Filicudi ed Alicudi, a nord della costa della Sicilia, prima di proseguire verso Catania in Sicilia.
As I arrived at the harbour, in the middle of the day, with scorching temperatures of an unusually hot summer, I learned that the hydrofoil was cancelled for that day due to rough seas!!!
Appena sono arrivata al porto, a mezzogiorno, con delle temperature altissime in una estate caldissima, ho appreso che l’aliscafo non partiva quel giorno a causa del mare mosso!!!
I had managed to get to the harbour on time, travelling from another continent, but now I was stopped in my tracks!! I was told the hydrofoil would sail the following day!
Ero riuscita ad arrivare al porto in tempo, viaggiando da un altro continente, ma adesso venivo bloccata improvvisamente! Mi fu detto che l’aliscafo sarebbe partito il giorno successivo.
Well, spending a day in Naples is not that bad! It is just having to jog from one plan to another !
Be’, trascorrere un giorno a Napoli non e’ mica male! Il punto era dover cambiare da un programma ad un altro su due piedi!
Here I was, In the middle of the day, on a hot summer day at siesta time, looking for a place to stay!
Adesso mi ritrovavo, a mezzogiorno di un giorno caldissimo estivo all’ora della siesta a cercare un alloggio per una notte.
After a nice Neapolitan Pizza lunch, I did find a room at a B and B not far from the harbour! And after a much needed rest, I was on my way to a lovely stroll along the seafront in Naples- destination a seafood restaurant!!!
Dopo aver gustato una buona pizza napoletana, ho trovato un B e B non lontano dal porto! Quindi dopo un riposino, ho fatto una piacevole passeggiata sul lungomare di Napoli – destinazione un ristorante dove gustare del buon pesce!!
The next day the hydrofoil to Vulcano did leave from the designated Naples harbour, Mergellina. I was off for an approximately seven hour ride towards the island of Vulcano. Vulcano is the closest Aeolian island to Sicily.
Il giorno successivo l’aliscafo per Vulcano e’ partito dal porto di Napoli a Mergellina. Partivo per un viaggio di circa sette ore verso l’isola di Vulcano. Vulcano e’ l’isola Eolia piu’ vicina alla Sicilia.
The trip did take a little longer than planned as the sea was a little rough and when I arrived in Vulcano it was dark!!!. I headed to a taxi and was told by the taxi driver that my hotel was so close to the harbour that I should just walk. So walk I did, up a street with no lights, using the flash light on my iphone.
Il viaggio in aliscafo e’ durato un po’ piu’ del previsto a causa del mare un po’ agitato e quando sono arrivata a Vulcano era buio!! Mi son rivolta ad un tassista che mi disse che il mio albergo era cosi’ vicino al porto che era meglio andare a piedi. Quindi mi sono incamminata, su per una strada in salita, senza illuminazione, utilizzando la torcia del mio iphone!
The air was balmy and even though all I could see at first were large rocks on both sides of the street I felt safe. There was just a feeling of peace in the air! After just a few minutes walking, I made a turn to the right, at the top of the hill, and there I found restaurants, cafes and my hotel!
L’aria era mite e pur vedendo soltanto delle grandi rocce lungo i bordi della strada che stavo percorrendo a piedi mi sentivo al sicuro. Vi era una sensazione di pace nell’aria! Dopo pochi minuti che procedevo a piedi, ho svoltato a destra, in cima alla salita, e li ho trovato ristoranti, bar ed il mio albergo!
Arriving in Vulcano late at night, there were no hydrofoils for Filicudi until the next day in the afternoon. My plan was to catch the first hydrofoil to the island of Filicudi from Vulcano the next day. It departed around 2pm!
Essendo arrivata a Vulcano in tarda sera, non vi erano aliscafi in partenza per Filicudi fino al giorno successivo. Il mio piano era di prendere il primo aliscafo da Vulcano a Filicudi il giorno successivo; questo partiva alle ore14:00.
In Filicudi, I would spend three days exploring the island by land and by sea and take a hydrofoil for a visit to the island of Alicudi, the farthest and tiniest of the islands in the Aeolian Islands Archipelago!
A Filicudi avrei trascorso tre giorni esplorando l’isola via terra e per mare. Da li’ avrei preso un aliscafo per visitare l’isola di Alicudi in giornata. Alicudi e’ la piu’ lontana e la piu’ piccola delle isole Eolie!
The days spent in Filicudi were absolutely magical! What an adventure but what an amazing outcome to the frustration of having flights to Catania cancelled day by day!!!!
I giorni trascorsi a Filicudi sono stati totalmente magici! Che avventura ma che risultato sorprendente dopo la frustrazione di avere i voli per Catania cancellati giorno dopo giorno!

Filicudi offers amazing hiking trails and at sea fabulous snorkeling. I took two boat trips circumnavigating the island with breathtaking views and made stops to go snorkeling in the royal blue sea!
Filicudi offre percorsi per trekking interessanti ed a mare snorkeling favoloso. Ho fatto il giro dell’isola in barca ben due volte con viste mozzafiato e fermandomi a fare snorkeling in un mare blu reale!
Sometimes one must look at a hindrance as an opportunity to shift gears! I did that and am so grateful for the experience!
A volte bisogna vedere un ostacolo come un’opportunità’ di cambiare rotta! Ho fatto proprio questo e provo tanta gratitudine per l’esperienza che ne e’ stata il risultato!
After a few fabulous days on the archipelago, I travelled by sea to Sicily and reached my final destination, Catania, Sicily.
Dopo alcuni giorni favolosi nell’arcipelago, ho viaggiato via mare verso la Sicilia e sono arrivata alla mia destinazione finale, Catania, Sicilia.
The best places are those you stumble upon when you least expect to do so. Recently, I was on a midday walk in Capitol Hill, DC, at the Eastern Market, looking for a place to have some Italian food and found a slice of Italy right there!!!!
E’ bellissimo trovare per caso dei luoghi che non ti aspettavi di trovare. Recentemente, passeggiavo a mezzogiorno a Capitol Hill, a Washington DC, intorno all’Eastern Market, in cerca di un luogo che servisse cibo italiano ed ho trovato una fetta d’Italia, proprio li’!!!
Walking down 7th St towards Pennsylvania Ave I stumbled upon an Italian eatery! I had recently seen the name of this business and was pleasantly surprised to have actually, accidentally, found it! I was in front of La Casina DC – Pinseria Romana.
Percorrendo la 7th Street verso la Pennsylvania Ave per caso sono capitata in un ristorante italiano! Avevo visto il nome di questa attività’ di recente ma sono stata piacevolmente sorpresa di averla trovata, cosi’, per caso! Mi trovavo davanti a La Casina DC – Pinseria Romana.
A Pinseria is where Pinsa is made and Pinsa may look like pizza but it is very different in its ingredients and the process of preparation. As I entered La Casina DC and met the owners, Fabrizio and Angelina Costantini, I was curious and asked them about Pinsa. They explained that Pinsa is originally from Rome and that in 2005 Pinsa gained a new popularity. As I quickly looked up Pinsa, I learned that Pinsa had been created by Ancient Romans at the time of the Roman Empire!!
Alla Pinseria servono la Pinsa e per quanto la Pinsa possa somigliare alla pizza e’ molto differente per gli ingredienti utilizzati ed il processo di preparazione. Appena entrata in La Casina DC ho incontrato i proprietari, Fabrizio ed Angela Costantini. Ero curiosa ed ho chiesto loro cosa fosse la Pinsa. Mi hanno spiegato che la Pinsa e’ originaria di Roma e che nel 2005 la Pinsa ha riacquistato popolarità’. Velocemente, ho cercato informazioni sulla Pinsa ed ho appreso che la Pinsa era stata creata dagli antichi Romani ai tempi dell’Impero Romano.
The Pinsa dough is made utilizing three types of flour, wheat, soy, and rice flour. Pinsa utilizes little yeast if compared to pizza and undergoes a leavening process of between 48-72 hours which produces a dough that is light and easy to digest. The dough is shaped into an oval shape. As with pizza, there are different Pinsas made with a variety of ingredients in the toppings.
L’impasto per la Pinsa e’ preparato utilizzando tre tipi di farina, frumento, farina di soia e farina di riso. Si usa poco lievito paragonato alla pizza e la lievitazione che va dalle 48 alle 72 ore crea un impasto leggero e facilmente digeribile. La Pinsa si crea a forma ovale. Cosi’ come per la pizza, vi sono tanti tipi di Pinsa realizzate con una varietà’ di ingredienti aggiunti sopra l’impasto.
The photo above shows the oven at La Casina DC which in its interior is made of a stone imported from Italy. It is a refractory stone and the wood utilized in this oven is both oak and cherry.
La foto in alto mostra il forno a La Casina DC il cui materiale interno e’ una pietra importata dall’Italia. Questa e’ una pietra refrattaria e la legna utilizzata proviene sia dalla quercia che dal ciliegio.
I ordered a Pinsa Margherita with just tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella, oil and basil. It was exceptional!! Furthermore, I must say that indeed the Pinsa was very light and easily digested.
Ho ordinato una Pinsa Margherita con pomodoro, mozzarella di bufala, olio e basilico. Era eccezionale!! In più’ devo dire che la Pinsa era davvero leggera e l’ho digerita facilmente.
While talking to Angela I learned of two of the Special Pinsas on the Menu. They are Ottavo Colle, which means Eighth Hill, in honor of the neighborhood in Rome where the owners came from and Capitol Hill, their new residence here in DC.
Mentre parlavo con Angela mi ha detto di due Pinse sul menu Speciale. Sono la Pinsa Ottavo Colle per riconoscere il quartiere di Roma da dove son venuti Fabrizio ed Angela e la Pinsa Capitol Hill, per riconoscere il quartiere della loro nuova residenza qui a Washington DC.

Have you ever found yourself in an olive grove? Have you enjoyed admiring the grey taupe hues of the leaves? I recently enjoyed such an experience with a friend.
Back in Sicily, some of my friends grow olive trees to produce the olive oil solely for their family’s consumption. When it is time to harvest the olives and then take them to be milled, it becomes a time of sharing work and fruit of labor with family and friends.
Last week, I joined a friend, Robi, in her final olive harvesting hand picking olives from the last of her trees remaining to be harvested.
Standing under an olive tree, with its enveloping beauty, transmits a sense of peace and calm. Sharing hand picking the olives with Robi was such an enjoyable experience.
After picking the olives and enjoying a seafood lunch together, it was time to head to the olive mill. The olives then went through the process of being separated from the last leaves, washed and cold pressed. It is so exciting to watch the process and wait for the the final step when the golden “nectar” flows into your container.
What a unique experience it is to taste the olive oil right there and then with its unique unbeatable freshness.
What an enjoyable experience shared with a friend and to then see and taste that liquid gold!
Driving to the northwestern coast of Sicily, just as the Golfo di Castellammare begins, lies the town of Terrasini.

The feast of Saint Agatha, the celebration of Sant’Agatha, Patron Saint of Catania, takes place each year from February 3rd to the 5th, in the City of Catania, Sicily. The remains of The Saint which are kept throughout the year in the Cathedral are now carried around the city, following specific traditional routes, which are the same year after year. The man pulled vehicle, called ‘a vara” in Sicilian dialect, “fercolo” in Italian, carries the remains of Sant’Agata throughout the city for three days and one long night. The crowds gather around the “fercolo” and many devotees wearing the traditional white tunic, “u saccu di Sant’Agata”, are both “i portatori”, the pullers, as well as followers. The thick ropes that pull the “fercolo”are just over 100 meters
La Festa di Sant’Agata, la celebrazione di Sant’Agata, Patrona di catania, si svolge ogni anno dal 3 al 5 Febbraio a Catania in Sicilia. I resti della santa custoditi durante l’anno presso la Cattedrale di Catania sono trasportati in un “fercolo’, a “vara”, in dialetto Siciliano per le strade della città’ seguendo specifiche tradizioni che si susseguono anno dopo anno. Il fercolo gira per le strade della città’ per tre giorni ed una lunga notte. La folla di gente si aggira intorno al fercolo e molti devoti indossano una tradizionale tunica bianca denominata in dialetto “u saccu di Sant’Agata.” In mezzo alla folla di gente vi sono “i portatori” e coloro che seguono il percorso. Le corde spesse che tirano il fercolo sono circa 100 metri in lunghezza.

Enormous candles are made for the occasion – degli enormi ceri si realizzano per l’occasione.
In the following photo is Piazza Duomo – The Cathedral in backdrop with the symbol of Catania, the Elephant, “u liotru”. In this picture, one can see the “Cerei”, “i cannaroli” in Sicilian, gathered around. The cerei will tour the city for days on the occasion. Each “cereo” is made by an association and the people of that association will carry the cereo on their shoulders for long, long hours.

Sant’Agatha was born in the III Century A.C. and lived in Catania. At that time, the Romans ruled Catania and Procunsul Quinziano had been sent to enforce the Edict of Decius that dictated Christians renounce their Faith publicly or suffer severe consequences. Agatha was a young Christian girl. After the pressures of renouncing her Faith, she refused and also resisted to the personal advances by Quinziano, who took a personal interest in the girl. Consequently, Agatha was tortured and died in her prison cell. Over the years, many people have made a vow to the Saint and promised to wear a white tunic during the celebrations of her Feast each year. The tunic, called “u saccu” is worn by the devotees of all ages, both female as well as male.
Sant’Agata nacque nel III Secolo d.C. e visse a Catania. Inquel periodo i Romani era al comando di Catania ed il Proconsole Quinziano era stato inviato per far rispettare l’editto di Decio che imponeva ai cristiani di rinunciare alla loro fede pubblicamente e se si fossero rifiutati avrebbero subito conseguenze gravi. Agata era una giovane cristiana. Dopo aver subito pressioni per rinunciare alla propria fede, si rifiuto’. Inoltre ha anche resistito e rifiutato le attenzioni personali di Quinziano che aveva un interesse personale verso la giovane. Di conseguenza Agata fu torturata e mori’ in prigione. Nel corso degli anni, molte persone hanno fatto un voto alla Santa e promesso di indossare la tunica bianca durante le celebrazioni della sua festa ogni anno. La tunica, “u saccu”, viene indossato dai devoti di tutte le eta’, sia maschi che femmine.
The Aeolian Islands is an archipelago that lies off the Northeastern Coast of Sicily.
Filicudi, one of the Aeolian islands, is located on the western side of the archipelago and has an active Wildlife Conservation facility. “The Filicudi Wildlife Conservation is a non-profit association aimed at studying and conserving the marine resources of the Aeolian Archipelago with particular regard to the populations of cetaceans and sea turtles…” You can read about the association on their website, which is the following: “filicudiconservation.com.”
Le Isole Eolie sono un arcipelago che giace di fronte alla costa nord orientale della Sicilia.
Filicudi, una delle isole Eolie, giace sulla parte occidentale dell’arcipelago ed e’ la sede della Filicudi Wildlife Conservation. “La Filicudi Wildlife Conservation e’ un’associazione non-profit con lo scopo di studiare le risorse marine dell’arcipelago eoliano con interesse specifico alle popolazioni dei cetacei e le tartarughe marine…” Potrete leggere di questa associazione sul loro sito web, che segue: “filicudiconservation.com.”
On the day I visited, Noemi introduced me to a sea turtle, Venerdi’, that had been rescued from sea when it was very weak and not doing well due to the garbage it had eaten at sea. While showing me Venerdi’, Noemi explained the interventions her team had done and that the sea turtle had managed to defecate trash as plastic and sigarette butts and was doing very well. In fact, Naomi told me that Venerdi’ would be taken back to its natural habitat and released at sea the following day.
Il giorno in cui ho visitato il centro Noemi mi ha parlato della tartaruga di nome Venerdi’ che era stata salvata quando era in condizioni cattive e debole a causa della plastica e le cicche di sigarette che aveva ingerito. Mentre Noemi mi mostrava Venerdì’, mi spiegava gli interventi portati avanti da lei e la sua squadra e che Venerdi’ era riuscita ad espellere la plastica e le cicche di sigarette e si era ripresa. Infatti, Noemi mi informo’ che Venerdi’ sarebbe tornato nel proprio habitat e lasciato in mare il giorno successivo.

I went on an excursion at sea in which Noemi shared interesting information on the geology, history and marine fauna of the island. Naomi’s explanations were excellent. Pictured below is the rock named Canna, which is 71 meters high. Canna is the result of volcanic action in Filicudi dating back 40,000 years! Snorkeling around the Canna was a breathtaking experience!
Ho partecipato ad una escursione a mare in cui Naomi ha condiviso informazioni interessanti sulla geologia, storia e fauna marina dell’isola. Le delucidazioni di Naomi erano eccellenti. In basso la foto del faraglione chiamato Canna, alto 71 metri. Canna e’ il risultato di eventi vulcanici nell’isola di Filicudi 40.000 anni fa! Un escursione con maschera intorno alla Canna e’ stata mozzafiato!

Yesterday I joined Robi and some old friends in her home on Mt Etna as the task at hand was making a traditional Sicilian Fall dessert, Cotognata!!!
Ieri sono andata a casa di Robi sull’Etna ed insieme a lei ed alcuni vecchi amici abbiamo preparato un dolce tradizionale Siciliano, la Cotognata!
Cotognata is made from quince, which in Italy are called, “mele cotogne.” Quince are as hard as a rock so to utilize them one must cook them. In this occasion, six kilograms of quince were cooked in boiling water and then pureed.
La cotognata si prepara con le mele cotogne, che in Italia sono infatti chiamate “mele cotogne.” Le mele cotogne sono dure come le pietre quindi per consumarle si devono cucinare. In questa occasione, sono state cucinate in acqua bollente sei chili di mele cotogne e poi sono state fatte a puree’.
Once the quince were in a puree form, they were placed in a large pot on the stove. There were kg 3.7 of puree and kg 3.2 of sugar were added.
Una volta che le mele cotogne erano a puree’, sono state messe in una pentola grande sul fornello. Vi erano 3,7 chili di puree’ ed sono stati aggiunti 3,2 chili di zucchero.
Then the process of stirring the mixture started while it was cooking. The mixture thickens and darkens while being cooked and yesterday the process took about 45 minutes. As Robi told me, you know the mixture is cooked enough when it sizzles in a particular way. 😉
Quindi e’ iniziato il processo di mescolare mentre la miscela cuoceva. Durante la cottura, la miscela diventa più’ densa e scura ed ieri questo processo e’ durato per 45 minuti. Come mi ha detto Robi, l’impasto e’ cotto quando sfrigola in un modo particolare.

In another pot, the water from cooking the quince and another 3.2 kg of sugar were also cooked. You know that the liquid mixture is ready when the liquid acquires a syrup form.
In un’altra pentola, si e’ messo a cucinare l’acqua di cottura delle mele cotogne con aggiunta di altri 3,2 chili di zucchero. Questa miscela e’ pronta quando il liquido acquisisce una densita’ di sciroppo.
Once the quince puree was done, it was poured into the traditional Sicilian earthenware bowls etched with a variety of images. The bowls are left to dry for a couple of days covered with a cotton cloth while the puree solidifies.
Quando il puree’ delle mele cotogne era pronto, lo si e’ versato nelle forme di terracotta tradizionali Siciliane che hanno delle incisioni con varie immagini. Queste forme si lasciano asciugare, coperte con un telo di cotone, per alcuni giorni mentre il puree’ si solidifica.
As most children who grew up in Sicily, I had a Nonna who would make cotognata and just taking a pinch to taste it yesterday brought back those memories of the foods of my childhood!!
Come tanti bambini che sono cresciuti in Sicilia, avevo una Nonna che preparava la cotognata ed ieri solo assaggiandone un pochino mi son tornati i ricordi dei sapori della mia infanzia!
And what do you do after making cotognata? We all gathered around the table for dinner with traditional Sicilian pizza, stuffed with ricotta cheese and anchovies, and some local red wine!
E cosa si fa dopo aver preparato la cotognata? Ci siamo seduti tutti a tavola per cena con la pizza tradizionale Siciliana, imbottita con ricotta ed acciughe ed abbiamo bevuto del vino rosso autoctono!
On the coast of Catania, in Ognina, lies a campground that belongs to the memories of my adolescent years. As a teenager, I used to spend my summers with my family camping there, swimming and enjoying building friendships that have endured the test of time and distance.
Sulla costa di Catania, ad Ognina, vi e’ un Campeggio che appartiene ai ricordi della mia adolescenza. Da adolescente, trascorrevo le mie estati insieme alla mia famiglia in quel Campeggio, nuotando ed instaurando amicizie che sono durate nel tempo e con la distanza.
I recently returned to visit this campground, Camping Ionio with the friend I met there over fifty years ago, Patrizia!
Recentemente sono ritornata a visitare quel Campeggio, il Camping Ionio , insieme all’amica che ho incontrato li oltre cinquant’anni fa, Patrizia
In the seventies, the campground was owned by Silvestro Zingale and his children wheras today it is his son, Pippo Zingale, that owns and runs the place.
Negli anni settanta il Campeggio era la proprieta’ di Silvestro Zingale ed I suoi figli, mentre oggi e’ il figlio Pippo Zingale il proprietario e gestore del Campeggio.
Naturally, after fifty years, the place has undergone major renovations. The simple courtyard that at night, in the 70’s, was a gathering place for us teenagers gathering around a guitar player is now a lovely restaurant.
Naturalmente, dopo cinquant’anni, il luogo ha subito ristrutturazioni importanti. Il semplice cortile che la sera negli anni 70 era un punto d’incontro per noi adolescenti seduti intorno ad uno che suonava la gitarra e’ adesso un bel ristorante.
Pippo Zingale has done a great job maintaining and improving the facility. He has also created a wine cellar which holds exquisite Sicilian wines and Pippo plans events that bring people from various locations together.
Pippo Zingale ha fatto un lavoro eccezionale nel mantenere e migliorare questa struttura. Egli ha anche creato una cantina che contiene vini Siciliani squisiti e Pippo organizza eventi che portano persone da varie zone ad incontrarsi.
In the seventies, many locals used to move to this campground to spend their summers. Nowadays, the campground is part of a network bringing an extended amount of campers from all over Europe.
Negli anni settanta, molta gente del luogo si trasferiva in questo Campeggio per trascorrere l’estate. Oggigiorno, il Campeggio fa parte di una rete che porta tanti campeggiatori da tutta Europa.
While visiting the wine cellar, I acquired these two exquisite wines shown above. The bottle of Nero D’Avola to the right, Terra delle Sirene, was produced by Do Zenner, the first biodynamic wine producer in Sicily. Do, also, as a child, in the 70’s, spent his summers with his family at Camping Ionio.
Durante la mia visita alla cantina, ho acquistato due vini squisiti. La bottiglia di Nero d’Avola , Terre delle Sirene, e’ stato prodotto da Do Zenner, il primo produttore di vino biodinamico in Sicilia. Anch Do, da bambino, negli anni settanta, trascorreva le sue estati insieme alla sua famiglia al Camping Ionio.
Quando ho chiesto a Pippo un suo commento mi ha risposto come segue. Pippo crede che La seconda generazione gli chieda di mantenere bene il Campeggio e preservarlo per I loro figli. In questo modo, anche loro potranno ipmparare il valore del vivere insieme in Campeggio; la socializzazione, le amicizie e la cooperazioneiglia al Camping Ionio.
When I asked Pippo for his comment, he replied the following. Pippo believes the second generation wants him campers wants him to maintain this Campground well to preserve it for their children. This way, they, too, can learn the value of living together in camping: socializing, friendship and cooperation.

Strolling through Ortigia is mesmerizing and the array of colors burst from each corner to brighten the baroque architectural style.
Una passeggiata in Ortigia e’ incantevole e le sfumature dei colori si sprigionano da ogni angolo per illuminare lo stile architettonico barocco.
When staying in Ortigia, due to limited parking space, one usually has to park at one of the public parking garages and then walk with luggage to one’s lodging. As the ancient city has limited car access and parking, so finding a bed and breakfast that offered its own parking space when I recently returned to Ortigia was delightful. The B and B , I Santi Coronati, offers its own courtyard parking space which makes staying there very convenient. The areas where traffic is limited to those holding a pass are marked ZTL, Zona Traffico Limitato.
Quando si pernotta in Ortigia, dato che i posteggi auto sono limitati, solitamente bisogna posteggiare in uno dei garage publici e poi camminare coi bagagli verso il luogo dove si alloggia. Dato che La città’ antica ha posteggi ed accesso auto limitati, durante la mia recente visita l’aver trovato un B e B che avesse il proprio spazio per posteggiare e’ stato molto piacevole. Le zone a traffico limitato sono indicate con la sigla ZTL, zona traffico limitato.
Besides the main attractions, just strolling through Ortigia and taking in its sights and sounds is food for the soul.
The coastlines of Sicily are quite diverse offering the visitor who is traveling around the island the opportunity to encounter beaches adorned by golden sand, pebbles or rocks in close proximity to one another. When traveling to the South-Eastern coast of Sicily and on to the first portion of the Southern coast it is still possible to find pristine beaches and an absence of huge hotels lining the beaches.
Le coste della Sicilia sono molto varie ed offrono a chi viaggia intorno all’isola l’opportunita’ di incontrare spiaggie adornate da sabbia dorata, ciottoli o scogli tutti vicini l’uno all’altro. Quando si viaggia verso la costa Sud-Orientale della Sicilia ed alla parte iniziale della costa meridionale e’ ancora possibile trovare spiaggie incontaminate e l’assenza di grandi alberghi che delineano le spiaggie.
This post and the following three posts in chronological order will introduce four beaches on the Southern part of Sicily. They are Plemmirio Marine Nature Reserve and Portopalo di Capo Passero on the Ionian Sea, the East Coast. Following is Isola delle Correnti, on the southern tip of the Sicily which is the meeting point for the Ionian Sea on one side and the Mediterrranean Sea on the other. The third post to follow will introduce S. Maria del Focallo on the Southern Coast of Sicily. the Mediterranean Sea.

Essi sono la Area Marina Protetta del Plemmirio e Portopalo di Capo Passero sul mare Ionio, la costa orientale. Segue Isola delle Correnti sulla punta meridionale della Sicilia che e’ ilp unto d’incontro del mare Ionio su un versante ed i mare Mediterranea sull’altro. Il terzo post che segue questo introdurra’ S. Maria del Focallo sulla costa meridionale della Sicilia, il Mare Mediterraneo.
On the South-Eastern Coast of Sicily, in the Municipality of Siracusa, lies Plemmirio Marine Nature Reserve. There are several points to access the coastline of Plemmirio. Many paths to reach the sea are rugged terrain that lead to breathtaking views and cliffs.
Sulla costa Sud-orientale della Sicilia, nel comune di Siracusa, giace la Area Marina Protetta Plemmirio. Vi sono vari punti d’accesso della costiera del Plemmirio. Molti percorsi per raggiungere il mare nel Plemmirio sono con terreno sterrato e portano a scogliere e viste panoramiche mozzafiato.
There is a sandy beach in Plemmirio, of public access, in a small cove, located on Via Faro Massolivieri, Access number 35. Following are photos of this beach. The beach is called La Spiaggia del Minareto or Punta Castelluccio. This beach is approximately a 20 minute drive from the city of Siracusa.
Vi e’ una spiaggia con sabbia nel Plemmirio che offre accesso al pubblico, in una caletta, e si trova in Via Faro Massolivieri, Sbocco numero 35. Seguono immagini di questa spiaggia. La spiaggia si chiama La Spiaggia del Minareto o Punta Castelluccio. Questa spiaggia dista approssimativamente 20 minuti in auto dalla citta’ di Siracusa.
The many access areas in Plemmirio are numbered. You are on your own with no lifeguards and some spots are quite tricky to reach!
I tanti punti d’accesso al Plemmirio sono numerati. Si e’ da soli senza persone addette al salvataggio ed alcuni posti sono abbastanza difficili da raggiungere!
There is only one access area in Plemmirio Marine Reserve, Access #23, where you will find the only “Lido” called “Varco 23”.
Vi e’ soltanto un punto d’accesso alla Area Marina Protetta del Plemmirio, Accesso # 23, dove si trova l’unico “Lido” del Plemmirio chiamato “Varco 23.”.
At this facility, you can avoid walking on the sharp uneven rocks and take a walkway with handrails and steps to reach the sea. At the lido you have several amenities as sunbeds, showers, lifeguards, coffee shop and a restaurant/pizzeria.
In questo lido si puo’ evitare di camminare sulla scogliera appuntita seguendo una pedana con corrimano e gradini per raggiungere il mare. Al lido vi sono vari servizi come lettini, docce, salvataggio, bar ed un ristorante/pizzeria.
If you enjoy snorkeling Plemmirio is the place to go. The sea is still crystal clear and the schools of fish plentiful to see!!! The best snorkeling is along the rocky coastline.
Il Plemmirio e’ un posto ideale per gli amanti dello snorkeling. Il mare e’ trasparente come il cristallo e si possono vedere tanti banchi di pesci. Il miglior snorkeling e’ ungo la costiera rocciosa.
Santa Maria del Focallo lies on the Southern Coast of Sicily, the Mediterranean Sea. This location offers pristine beaches, sand dunes and a peaceful atmosphere.
Santa Maria del Focallo giace sulla costa meridionale della Sicilia, il Mare Mediterraneo. In questa zona vi sono spiagge incontaminate, dune di sabbia ed un’atmosfera serena.
For the last thirty years, The Foundation for Environmental Education has been awarding a prestigious title, Bandiera Blu, translated Blue Flag, to the beaches in Italy that have met the criteria of excellence. The criteria of excellence must relate to sustainable tourism, trash management, clean waters, respecting the natural resources and the depuration systems. In 2022, Santa Maria del Focallo was awarded the Bandiera Blu!!!
Nel corso degl’ultimi trent’anni, la Fondazione per l’Educazione Ambientale ha assegnato un titolo prestigioso, Bandiera Blu, alle spiagge italiane che hanno dato prova di eccellenza. La prova di eccellenza deve riferirsi al turismo sostenibile, la gestione dei rifiuti, la condizione dell’acqua, il rispetto delle risorse naturali ed i sistemi depurativi. Nel 2022 Santa Maria del Focallo ha ottenuto il riconoscimento della Bandiera Blu!!!
On a morning walk along the beach, I saw a group of people at a distance, out at sea, on paddleboards, but they were not paddling.
After grabbing my camera, I returned to the spot on the shore and found a young lady and her paddleboard. She told me she had been out at sea earlier with her group on paddleboards as she had taught a yoga class on paddleboards out at sea!!!
Passeggiando lungo la spiaggia di mattina ho visto un gruppo di persone a distanza, nel mare, su tavole da SUP, ma le tavole erano ferme in un punto.
Dopo aver preso la mia macchina fotografica son tornata in riva al mare ed ho trovato una giovane donna con la sua tavola da SUP. Mi ha spiegato che precedentemente era stata in mare col suo gruppo con le tavole da SUP e che aveva condotto una lezione di yoga sulle tavole in acqua!!!
